However as Les said, there could have been an ESD issue.
To prevent this, most ProCurve switches now include a CESD Grounding Tap in the box which you connect to the console port on the switch. With any cable you first connect it to the tap to dischange any built up electrostatic charge, next disconnect the cable and then plug it into the switch port.
If you don't have one you can order one from HP partsurfer with this part number: 5064-9974. http://partsurfer.hp.com/ - $5.87
