Procurve 2124 switch connected to 2824 and 2124 blew out!

Can't you simply connect the 10/100 Procurve 2124 to the Gigabit 10/100/1000 model 2824 with an ethernet patch cable from on device to the other. The 2824 is auto sensing. Our network was growing, and when we re-arranged the rack a little, and added the 2824, the 2124 quit working and had to be replaced. Am I missing something? Does the 2124 need a Transeiver to connect to the 2824? Please advise. And thank you!

Unless you had some really bad ESD or ground loop problems, it should not have happened. There is nothing special needed to cascade the 2124 to the 2824.

Les, thank you for the reply. Another technical person had suggested getting the Transceiver to connect them together... but you say nothing is needed... So then, what is the tranceiver option used for (in the 2124)?

The transceiver option is for 100-FX fibre optic - used if you need to connect the switch up to 2km's away.

Thank you Matt. So, Matt, you think we just blew out the 2124 by sheer accident. Unplugging and replugging? It just seems odd, and expensive, and of course it brought 24 users down. I replaced the Hub, and have NOT re-introduced the 2824 for fear the same problem will occur. So I do not need a tranceiver in the 2124, and it doesn't matter what ethernet opening I connect the two with? Just connect them, and they will work?

I think you were just unlucky. There should be no tricks to it, just connect them up.

However as Les said, there could have been an ESD issue.

To prevent this, most ProCurve switches now include a CESD Grounding Tap in the box which you connect to the console port on the switch. With any cable you first connect it to the tap to dischange any built up electrostatic charge, next disconnect the cable and then plug it into the switch port.
