Testing network speeds across GB network

Hi I am testing speeds across a GB network by sending a file which is 111mb via ftp between the two systems. When I first send the file, the speeds are
111001600 bytes sent in 34.71 seconds (3122.58 Kbytes/s)

Without then removing the file from disk on the destination machine, I send it again and the speeds drop to
111001600 bytes sent in 5.91 seconds (18349.14 Kbytes/s)

This seems to be my disk write time which is the cause. Can I therefore assume the 5.91 seconds is a good indication of the time it takes the test the nw speed ?
