VLAN routing across two switches

More of a concept question. We have a 2626 and a 2650 switch; the 2626 is the 'core', and we recently set up a VOIP VLAN on the switch in addition to the default VLAN. We need more ports so got a 2650 and are initially looking at hanging off the 2626 (can't spare downtime to replace it right now).

The 2626 has IP routing enabled, with an IP helper for DHCP, and it works properly for our VOIP equipment.

If we set up the VOIP VLAN on the 2650 and connect the two switches (both VLANs tagged on the inter-connecting ports, I believe is correct to maintain QOS handling), should the VLAN configs on the 2650 use the same IP addresses as the VLAN definitions on the 2626, presumably with routing disabled on the 2650, or should the 2650 have its own VLAN addresses defined and have IP routing enabled?

IOW does every switch participating in a VLAN do its own routing, or does one switch take care of all routing?

Thanks for any info.

Re: VLAN routing across two switches

Because you have two VLANs and its local, therefore you need one router, manning one switch has ip routing enable, then create a one subnet for the voip VLAN (ex 10.1.0.0/16) on all switches. Make sure for the uplink have tagging on the voip VLAN and untag on VLAN 1(management VLAN). And the command (voice) is implementing on the voip VLAN.

Re: VLAN routing across two switches

Abdullah,
thanks. We do have the 'voice' setting on the VOIP VLAN, and it is working fine on the original 2626 switch.

There are only two VLANs at this point; the default VLAN 1 (data) and VOIP VLAN 2 (VOIP); management VLAN, if desired, will come later.

We'll set up the test with the 2650, both VLANs defined, linked to the 2626 but leaving routing only on the 2626. I'll post back how it goes.

Re: VLAN routing across two switches

Boss took the extra switch away before we could test (it got 'allocated elsewhere'). Thanks anyway
