VLan/Switches

I have an issue with computers connected via ethernet cable cannot get out to the internet but yet the wireless access works and they are both connected to the same port (4) on the switch going to the access gateway-firewall. When plugged in via ethernet it pulls a false IP address 169.254... and will not connect to the internet. Any help would be appreciated as I am at a loss for what to do.

Re: VLan/Switches

Do you have DHCP configured on the wired network? 169.254 is an apipa, automatic private ip addressing thing of Microsoft

What kind of machine is it? HP router? Is DHCP configured on the correct interface/subnet

Re: VLan/Switches

I agree with Tijl.
The address 169.254... is something the client selects on its own when it cannot find a DHCP-server.
So definitely the DCHP-server cannot be found (in time).
This may be a config-error on the switch vlan's?, routing ?, dhcp-helper ?
This can also be an issue with auto-speed detection between the switchport and the computerport.
If this autospeed has not finished before the DHCP-request times out, the computer "concludes" no dhcp-server present on the network and selects an APIPA adress.

You may tryto set the port-speed/duplex "fixed" on switch and computer.
You can also choose to set an ip-address manually.
If both don't work you need to dig deeper into the switches config.
