XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

Hi guys,

I have a strange problem with XRRP configuration of two ProCurve 5308xl switches.

Please see the attachments.

There are two vlans defined for XRRP - 520, 2048.

The problem is that when I unplug the B10 port (please see topology.jpg) Router1 doesn't take the IP address of Router2. I cannot ping the gateway address of the laptop which is 192.168.1.2 - router2's ip address.

Attachments:
topology.jpg - simple picture of the topology
before.txt - xrrp status before unpluging port B10
after.txt - xrrp status after unpluging port B10

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

PS: If some info is missing please ask.

Re: XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

Hi

Would you attach the sh run for SW-1, and the output of the commands below:
show xrrp config instance 1 520
show xrrp config instance 1 2048

Good Luck !!!

Check that there is no ring. I mean that could be spanning tree protocol that disables one way.

Re: XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

These are the configurations of the switches.

The IPs on the .jpg image that I sent before are changed, but I think that it doesn't matter.

As I see sw2 understands that the vlan2048 is down but sw1 doesn't take the IP of sw2. Something with the communication between both switches is wrong.

Re: XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

Hi

I checked out the configuration, its little bit long :) , and i think what you have done is configure XRRP on both switches to backup vlan 2048 and i have some comments:

- SW1 doesn't have the command (xrrp router 1), i know its by default 1, but its better to excute it.
- SW1 and SW2 don;t have toe command (xrrp domain number), even its by default 1, but again beter to have it.

- SW2 spanning tree with priority 4 and sw1 with priority 7, so SW2 is the root unless other Switch has lower priority, and i think there is no loop in here at least in Vlan 2048, but you should consider enabling MSTP since you have alot of VLans.

- Although, ip proxy-arp should not be used on non-xrrp vlans, other wise non-XRRP VLANs will not fail-over.

- You can remove the unknown-vlans from TRK8 and B10 since you have no GVRP enabled.

-For show xxrp stat in AFTER file that you attached, its showing that SW2 didn;t get to Vlan2048 after unplugging B10, and its showing that Vlan2048 status is "VlanDown".

-Vlan520 has multiple IPs, is there a reason for that, since its used only for XRRP as you mentioned.

For the time being thats what i got, try to remove proxy-arp and unknown-vlans and check it out.

Lets hear from you the good news :)

Good Luck !!!

Re: XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

Problem solved.

I had to add all IPs from multiple IP VLANs in the XRRP configuration.

Thank You for your answers.

Re: XRRP Issue - HP 5308xl switches

Hi Petar

The best thing in these cases is to install a Syslog software, and configure Syslog on both XRRP switches, then turn on debug, and isse debug destination (syslog IP).

Its really usefull because in such your case, XRRP will send a message that Vlan (number) has multiple IP on Router (number) which not there in same Vlan on Router (number).

Good Luck !!!
