Re: cat5 installation help

You might be on the wrong forum here but if you are interested in cat5 cabling you can try this site which sort of covers things a bit.

Re: cat5 installation help

should have mentioned...

I have worked with networks including ethernet and fibre channel. I have setup a simple FC SAN.
-
So how simple is a cat5e installation.

Thanks.

Re: cat5 installation help

I wrote internal document on this argument.
Cat.1-7 means characterists of network.
Cat.1:1Mbs (telephone)
Cat.2:4Mbs (used by old token ring)
Cat.3:10Mbs (old network)
Cat.4:16Mbs (non standard network)
Cat.5:100Mbs (used with twisted-pairs cable)
Cat.6:350Mbs
Cat.7:1000Mbs
Also are called nnn base T (10 Base T is cat.3, 100 base T is Cat.5) where T is twiste-pair cable; you can find also 1000 base SX or 1000 base LX fiber optic cat.7.
Every cat. imply specific cable and certification procedure; standard are emanated by IEEE comitated 802 http://www.ieee.org
if you use cat.5 can use standard by EIA/TIA http://www.tia.eia.org use 4 couple of twister pairs cable unshielded (UTP) and shielded (STP); STP cable are used in Cat.6 and Cat.7.
If you specific more I can tell you more specific info.

Re: cat5 installation help

Installing cable isn't rocket science - but neither is it trivial if you haven't done it before. IME, companies that baulk at spending the several hundred dollars a drop misunderstand what they're buying.
What that sum should include is correctly installed, tested and documented cable and connection hardware. Among other things, what you're paying for is the installer's experience, training and the cost of the test equipment to verify the installation is Cat5e compliant.
With sound cable plant, the offsetting savings should be:
- no employee downtime due to inability to access the IT services they need to accomplish their everyday work because of cable faults.
- your time. You should not have to approach every network problem by first having to trace & test the physical layer. When something has to be moved, you should not have to first trace the cables.
That said, if you must install yourself, find an experienced cable installer and work with him on a job or two (evenings, weekends or whatever). There are quite a few potential pitfalls, and by doing this you should avoid the worst of them.
I'm not familiar with the UK scene, but if you don't know anyone in the trade, have a look on the BICSI website (www.bicsi.org) and see which UK firms are listed.
Another possibility is that most of the larger manufacturers such as AMP, Avaya and Nordx run courses in how to install their products.

Re: cat5 installation help

Cat.5 installation.
There are 2 colors standard, called EIA/TIA T568B and EIA/TIA T568A; i use T568B.
All cable start from a user acces point to a dispach box. Every cable must be certificated using a special tester. User access point is a female plug called RJ45.
In dispatch box you can connect a client to a server using a patch cable (0,5 m UTP-8 cable).
In Building cabled you can transport any signal as network for PC and telephone signal but also serial communication, thief-proof singal, etc.
To make cabled network (called PDS) you need a specialist, you cannot build by your-self.
