hp 9304m software upgrade

Hello, I'm trying to update my old 9304m and am getting stuck on the software upgrade to H2R07601b.bin.

I've located an old thread that had a workaround, but it requires another version of the software that I can't find on the HP website.

The thread is here: http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Comp/comp.sys.hp.hardware/2006-04/msg00011.html

Does anyone have a copy of v7.1.24 (H2R07124.bin)?

Re: hp 9304m software upgrade

Sure I can send it to you, where do you want me to send it to?

It's 3 files and about 3.15MB zipped:
H2R07124.bin (Software)
HP-07124.pdf (ReleaseNotes)
STP-Caution.txt (READ THIS NOTICE)

But did you already talk to support regarding your issue (since the software is from 2002 and not supported anymore) I just want you to be on the safe-side before you break anything?

Re: hp 9304m software upgrade

I did locate the bin file on ftp.hp.com, so no need to send a copy.

Re: hp 9304m software upgrade

Background data:

Updating to v7.6.01b causes error code 8.

HP9304#copy tftp flash 10.12.48.8 H2R07601b.bin primary
HP9304#Code too large (3819979) to fit into the Code Area (2817536), abort!
File Type Check Failed
TFTP to Flash Error - code 8

Trying v7.1.24 gives error code 0 and flash error code 16.

HP9304#copy tftp flash 10.12.48.8 H2R07124.bin primary
HP9304#Flash Erase ----------------TFTP: received error request -- code 0 message Undefined error code
---TFTP: received error request -- code 0 message Undefined error code
-----------------------INFO: zap_code_flash() flash write failed
TFTP to Flash Error - code 16

Following up on flash trouble thread.

Re: hp 9304m software upgrade

Just wanted to let everyone know that the workaround linked above does in fact work. It will allow an upgrade from v7.1.19. The issue is apparent when comparing the Max code img size allotment:

HP9304#sh flash
Active management module:
Code Flash Type: AMD 29F032B, Size: 64 * 65536 = 4194304, Unit: 2
Boot Flash Type: AMD 29F040, Size: 8 * 65536 = 524288
Compressed Pri Code size = 2612179, Version 07.1.19T53 (H2R07119.bin)
Compressed Sec Code size = 2612179, Version 07.1.19T53 (H2R07119.bin)
Maximum Code Image Size Supported: 2817536 (0x002afe00)
Boot Image size = 281376, Version 07.06.05 (m2b07605.bin)

The max code size listed with v7.1.19 is less than with v7.1.24 loaded (even though the docs say this is fixed by the boot img v7.06.05). It now lists:

HP9304#sh flash
Active management module:
Code Flash Type: AMD 29F032B, Size: 64 * 65536 = 4194304, Unit: 2
Boot Flash Type: AMD 29F040, Size: 8 * 65536 = 524288
Compressed Pri Code size = 2674635, Version 07.1.24T53 (H2R07124.bin)
Compressed Sec Code size = 2612179, Version 07.1.19T53 (H2R07119.bin)
Maximum Code Image Size Supported: 3866112 (0x003afe00)
Boot Image size = 281376, Version 07.06.05 (M2B07605.bin)
HP9304#copy tftp flash 10.12.48.8 H2R07601b.bin primary
HP9304#Flash Erase ----------------------------------------------------------
Flash Memory Write (8192 bytes per dot) ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................TFTP to Flash Done.

As you can see, it's now working as expected.

H2R07124.bin is located at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/h2r07124.exe
