newbie direct console question

I can't seem to get my XP notebook to 'talk' to my new 2848 switches... I need to configure an IP address to troubleshoot, but I can't seem to get XP's hyperterminal to connect/login and I don't know what I am doing wrong. It doesn't help though that I haven't had to do anything like this since Win95....

never mind.... It works just fine when you aren't attempting to configure a faulty switch.. grrr!
