overlapping VLANs

overlapping VLANs

Could anyone help me know what HP switch will i use for overlapping VLANs? for example if a server is connected on port 1 on a switch, and the switch created 5 VLANs, all VLANs could access the server, but workstation on different VLANs will not see each other. Another thing is that the NIC of the server is not 802.1q capable. Is there a HP switch that has the capabilty of overlapping VLAN?

Re: overlapping VLANs

Most of the switches can do that.
ON port 1 set your server up (and no workstation on that port).
Say it's VLAN1.
Say that ports 2/3 are VLAN 2, ports 4/5/6/7 VLAN 3.
On your port 1 cponfiguration, select the option 'TAG', and tag port 1 to VLAN 2, then to VLAN 3.
From now, your server is seen on all VLANs, but each VLAN doesn't see the other.

What if the server NIC don't support 802.1Q tagged?

Re: overlapping VLANs

The mains issue is on your routers. They must be 802.1Q aware. The terminal equipments are not a problem in this scenario.

Tks to assign points if useful :]

Re: overlapping VLANs

Get a 2524 with the latest software which is
F.05.17 or better. In the release notes for F.05.17 you will find instructions for Isolated Port Groups. This is the feature that you need to do what you want without having to switch everything through a router.

Just put the server in the Uplink group and the rest in the Private Group and it will work like you want.
