procurve 3400cl-48 problem

I have installed a new 3400cl-48 over the weekend. At first it seemed to be working just fine. However this morning we had a problem with it. We lost all connectivity to everything on the switch. There was only the power light on and a connectivity light for port two. I could not get anything to work, so I rebooted the switch and then everything was working again. I have been looking through the log on the switch and I see some errors that I don't know what they mean. One of them happened about the time we lost all connectivity. Here are the messages:

M 06/04/05 19:16:08 sys: 'PPC Illegal Instruction exception vector 0x700:'

This last error was this morning when we lost all connectivity. The reboot due to power failure is when I pulled the plug to cycle the switch. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? Here is the firmware & ROM versions on my switch:

Firmware revision : M.08.62
ROM Version : I.08.05

Re: procurve 3400cl-48 problem

Hello,

Please gather some info about the network like topology etc. and a 'show tech all' and create a supportcall at HP. If it is a hardware issue they will provide you with another one if it is a software issue they will try to find out what the rootcause is.

Best Regards,

Hi Wade,

Out of curiosity, have you contacted HP? Did they have an answer on the error?

Re: procurve 3400cl-48 problem

I contacted HP and they replaced the switch and also had me send it to the LAB. They were interested in looking at it so they can find out what is happening. They were pretty sure it was a firmware issue. I have not heard anything other that that.

Re: procurve 3400cl-48 problem

from my (limitted) design perspective this box was broken hardly since basically ... these firmware revisions work with other switches of the same type with the same processor (I have one as well) and if there is processor code that could not be executed properly something went wrong seriously.

so the only question is why this chip passed the QA. guess thats what they want to find out.

if they have different results communicated to you, then I would be very interested in their explanation.

Re: procurve 3400cl-48 problem

Hello,

For all user of the switch HP with tthe same CPU, HP make new beta firmware :

I_08_71

We try this this day, ( Procurve 2848 ), but i don't understand how HP can less the bug for 2 month before make this new firmware.

I buy a lot of HP Switch, and i have some surprise ...

Reboot, spanning tree not the same 9304M and 2848 so the spanning not work at all ...
The firmware of 9304M are foundry code and 2848 are HP code ...

i hope we don't discover other "LITTLE" (HP talk) trouble ...
