prolems with an Alcatetel Speedtouch USB modem

I got a lot of problems connecting my old USB modem (Alcatel SpeedTouch) with a Presario x1000 with an operating system Win XP even after downloading the drivers for XP.
Sometimes the icon of the modem in notification area (in the start bar) seem like the modem was working ok even if the light on the modem (of USB and ADSL port) are both turn off......
Moreover, the system change my password when i try to setup and save the user and password for the adsl connection......
Anybody got some ideas?

Yes, there are many known problems with USB modems and XP USB ports use... You may find temporary tricks to fix it, but best would be to get a CAT5 plug modem instead...
