why my 56k modem connects at 21.6kbps

hi friends,
I have one External US robotics 56k modem.whenever I try to connect to internet through dialup, it connects at 21.6k ,,which makes me wonder why??? I didnt install any driver for it as windows xp automatically detects it. Do i have to provide drivers from other source??? or what settings do i hv to make to get it running at a faster speed? Any help will be highly appreciated.

If this modem is well known on your OS and the drivers are installed correctly it could be a bad fon line. If your your Computer has windows as the OS check the device manager for the recognition of the modem.

Re: why my 56k modem connects at 21.6kbps

thanks for your quick response HRE! It connects at a optimum speed on any internal modem,so we can rule out the possibility of bad phone line. Device Manager detects the modem as external european plug and play modem. I can do voice chat on yahoo messenger although at this 21.6 speed. but why does it connect at this lower speed thats not understandable to me...may be this is slowing down my internet speed.!!!!

Hi~

Did you link behind a PBX system? Some PBX system can not establish a 56k link with ISP.

I didnt install any driver for it as windows xp automatically detects it.

Your os recognized modem exactly in brand and model or else installed a generic US robotics driver?
However, I suspect may be a ISP bandwidth limitation.
