win98 on compaqnx9000

Can anybody tell me why is it impossible to install win98 on my compaq nx9000. I've tried several times and failed. In fact, for some reasons I need both win98 and win XP on my notebook (beacuse I have to use often French keyboard that I can remap only when working with win98). I tried to install ONLY win98, than both win98 and win XP as a multiboot system, but every time the installation failed. Only Win XP is accepted. What should i do? Thanks in advance.
