Must I use HP-branded SFP modules in 1700-24? J9080A

I recently purchased a 1700-24 to replace a 2424M with 1000BASE-SX uplink.  In the media room, the 2424M has a loud fan that makes it hard to follow the dialogue in movies with a wide dynamic range.  The fanless 1700-24 arrived recently and I slapped in a Finisar SX module but the switch will not link up to any J4113A module placed either in a 2424M or a 4000M.

I upgraded to the latest VB2.09 firmware in the 1700 but still no joy.  The switch otherwise seems fine.  I ordered a J4898C SFP module in the hopes that this will start working.  Oddly, two Finisar SX modules in ports 23 and 24 allowed the switch to link up with itself, which confuses me.

Can it really be true that without Procurve SFP modules the Procurve switches will not talk to other Procurve switches?  That seems nuts.  If so, will it also not work without Procurve fiber cables?

I just hope this is the only problem.

Is this true?  Thanks in advnace.

Start with checking duplex settings, the 1700 is Auto by default and the 2400/4000/8000 series is set to 1000FDX.

3rd party SFP's can work but are not supported. If you open a call with HP for any reason they can ask you to remove the SFP's before assisting with issues.

There are no ProCurve branded fiber cables, any calbes up to spec will work.

Forgot to add to check mixing RX/TX at the SFP side of the cable.

Thanks for the feedback.  I hope to have my HP module soon and hopefully that will fix the issue.

Thanks for the information.  I received the HP branded module and had the same results.  At that time I noticed my central 4000m switch had a fan failure and was erratic.  After replacing the 4000m with a spare, the 1700 still had issues until I changed the duplex setting from "Auto" to "1000FDX."  Then it magically all worked.

Sadly, now that the rack has been reconfigured and all networking is OK, the Procurve fan-replacement web site is having a runtime-error.

Nonetheless, as of now, the 1700-24 talks well to a 4000m over 1000BASE-SX.

I checked all the order pages and reported the issue. I hope they will reply soon that it's fixed.

The site appears to be functioning again.  Just now I ordered a new fan tray.
