A500 file system corruption - can I get configure the console online?

Hi Guys,

Its literally been years since I posted in here! I'm not at a site with a few legacy HP-UX systems.

I've got an A500 that looks to be in a very bad way, loads of messages like this:

vxfs: mesg 008: vx_direrr - / file system inode 71 block 12250 error 6

Although there is apparently a cable plugged into the built-in Lan console - the details don't appear to be recorded anywhere. Is there any way to configure the lan console from within the OS rather than sitting at the server with a terminal/GSP?

Thanks,

Tony

Bonjour Tony,

"Is there any way to configure the lan console from within the OS rather than sitting at the server with a terminal/GSP?"

Not really. You can configure your GSP/MP from a connected terminal or through DHCP.

"the details don't appear to be recorded anywhere"

Have you got a command like "CL" in your GSP/MP. It means "Console Log". With it you should be able to access latest messages sent to the console.

Hi Tony,

Below you can find the hardware and gsp documentation for the A500(renamed RP24XX)

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/2411/rp24xx_customer.pdf

http://web.tampabay.rr.com/batcave/GSPinfo.htm

vxfs: mesg 008: vx_direrr - / file system inode 71 block 12250 error 6

You could try to boot your system into lvm maintenance mode and run fsck on the filesystem. Also check if the disk is good.

# fsck -F vxfs -o full /dev/vgXX/rlvolyy

Re: A500 file system corruption - can I get configure the console online?

Thanks guys. I'm now going to see if I can find out what the IP is supposed to be. Is there a way to determine the MAC address of the console so I can get the networks team to trace it at the switch?

Thanks!

Re: A500 file system corruption - can I get configure the console online?

There should be a label on the server chassis.

But you can also rest the GSP to the defaults ...

I would consider to reset the password and configure the IP from a local session.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Oups, I misunderstood your initial post. I thought that "the details don't appear to be recorded anywhere" was related to the fact that all details of boot were not visible on the console :-(((

Anyway, I don't know how you could get MAC adress of GSP without connecting with a terminal to the GSP, then command LS (Lan Status), or checking at switch level.

Hmm, with properly marked cables or a good documentation you should easily find the switch port ... then you can find the mac address.

Just a thought ;-))

Hope this helps!
