Add New Tape Drive

We need to replace an existing Hp Storageworks Ultrium 460 tape drive with another drive of the same type. When we swap the hardware will we need to reboot the server or make any configuration changes within the O/S?

Normally, you don't need to reboot. You only have to run:

hwmgr scan scsi

It's very likely that now you will see tape0 and tape1. The tape0 device file should be removed and tape1 renamed to tape0.

hwmgr delete -id 195
dsfmgr -m tape1 tape0

We replaced the hardware but still have our original problem - we cannot tar to the device. What can we check at the OS level.

Please run:

# /usr/bin/tar cvf /dev/tape/tape0c testfile.txt

Using the trailing "c" at the end of the device name.
