Add New Tape Drive

We need to replace an existing Hp Storageworks Ultrium 460 tape drive with another drive of the same type. When we swap the hardware will we need to reboot the server or make any configuration changes within the O/S?

Below is some info from the sever that uses that tape drive:

# /sbin/hwmgr -view devices

Re: Add New Tape Drive

Normally, you don't need to reboot. You only have to run:

hwmgr scan scsi

It's very likely that now you will see tape0 and tape1. The tape0 device file should be removed and tape1 renamed to tape0.

hwmgr delete -id 195
dsfmgr -m tape1 tape0

Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Re: Add New Tape Drive

We replaced the hardware but still have our original problem - we cannot tar to the device. What can we check at the OS level.

# uname -a
OSF1 ofatest1 V5.1 2650 alpha

The output from the process follows:

# /sbin/hwmgr scan scsi
hwmgr: Scan request successfully initiated
# /sbin/hwmgr -view devices

Re: Add New Tape Drive

Please run:

# /usr/bin/tar cvf /dev/tape/tape0c testfile.txt

Using the trailing "c" at the end of the device name.

Re: Add New Tape Drive

Here's the result - same error.

# /usr/bin/tar cvf /dev/tape/tape0c testfile.txt
a testfile.txt 1 Blocks
tar: write : I/O error
tar: A write error has occurred.
#
