All LUNs reporting being in a degraded state

Hi,

I've just installed 11iv3 update 5 on a rp7420 box connected to a Clariion CX3-20.

I've started SMH and all the LUNs have a "minor" alarm, they are all in a "degraded state" but I can't find the cause for this alarm:

I've checked syslog for errors but didn't find anything relevant...all LUNs are "CLAIMED" when I run ioscan:

Any ideias where I should look for the root cause of this "degraded state"?

- is the Clariion on at least FLARE26?

- are all the LUNs presented to HP-UX 11.31 system configured in failover mode 4 (ALUA)

Those are what most folks get wrong when attaching HP-UX 11.31 systems to Clariion

-How can I check if the LUNs are configured in "failover" mode? Is this the only option or can I have "load balancig" between HBAs?

This is not a HP-UX setting - its a setting on the Clariion for the LUNs - I don't know how you check it... I suggest you consult the HP-UX connectivity guide from EMC...

The Clarrion is an ALUA (Asymmetric Logical Unit Access) array, and a s such each LUN is generally accessed through only the ports on one controller at any one time - different LUNs might be accessed via differemt controllers, but all IOs afor any given LUN are serviced by only 1 contoller at a time...

if its a clarion setting, so you should conneccdt to the storage processor of the clariion and them change it.

I'm having the same issue on 11.31, SMH v3.0.2 except the storage is IBM Shark. Is there a problem or is there a reporting problem?

I think the "degraded status" is the result of EMS disk monitor's wrong reporting(eventl.log). The EMS disk monitor is treating the Clariion LUNs as generic HP disk drives. Since they are not, the assessment of the monitor will be wrong and thus reporting. That been said, the EMS disk monitor doesn't support Clariion array or IBM array. It only supports DS2500, MSA 30/60/70, MSA 1000/1500 and Stand-alone HP disks


There were patches for EMS on earlier versions of HP-UX to avoid this reporting. A workaround is to disable monitoring of those Clariion LUNs.
