Alphaserver 4100 system serial number ...
Is it possible to obtain the system serial number of an Alphaserver 4100 running Tru64 V3.2G without shutting down the system ?
My customer's system is remotely located so I can't look at the back of the system box. Also I'd rather not install syscheck or any other app to do this.
Best regards,
John W.

Re: Alphaserver 4100 system serial number ...
You *might* be able to get it using consvar
# consvar -g sys_serial_num
This attempts to read the console variable from the machine, however it can be unreliable on early machines.
I'm also not sure whether that command's available on V3.2G. That's a rather old version !!
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Alphaserver 4100 system serial number ...
Other ways
it is written in profile.txt at location
/usr/opt/hp/svctools/specific/desta/config
should work in most server
in others replace hp via compaq.
Hope this help.

Re: Alphaserver 4100 system serial number ...
Thanks for your help but as it turns out consvar isn't implemented in V3.2G. I will have to go onsite and eyeball the serial number on the rear of the system box.
Regards,
John W.
