AFAIK forwarding X sets a pretty overhead on top of the already-slow ssh connection. If you are using it locally it's ok but trough a slow network the performance could be annoying. On Linux I am using VNC instead of directly forwarding X, this is much faster. But for that, you should have an X server installed directly on the machine, and an additional VNC server. But I don't have any specific experience with VNC on HP-UX.

Re: Alternatives to CDE
I was not able to get ssh working without having a reflection session running on my desktop. Was anybody able to do it with any other emulating software running on their desktops? I have HP-UX 11.31.
