Apache 2.2.15

All -

This is should be really simple, but it's not - typical.  I have the above mentioned apache version running on an 11.31 system - with Default self-signed certificates and default out of the box config for httpd.conf - when I attempt to open the web page:  https://x.x.x.x I receive this error in Firefox:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to x.x.x.x.

SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

(Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

I need to know how to start Apache with SSL - in the older versions of apache the startup file /etc/rc.config.d/

additionally I've noticed other servers we have, use: "/opt/hpws22/apache/bin/httpd -d /opt/hpws22/apache -k start -DSSL" - is this  "-DSSL" option necessary?  Or just an entry of "Listen:443" in httpd.conf?

What could be wrong?

Today is different and tomorrow the same.

I need to know how to start Apache with SSL - in the older versions of apache, the startup file "/etc/rc.config.d/hpws_apache" had two options, one for starting Apache and another for starting Apache with SSL, however, this is gone in Apache 2.2.x
