Boot failure on hpux 11.0

HI There!

I'm using hp-ux 11.0 server of type 9000 A400 PA2.0

When I rebooted my system, the problem occured which says that root shell has been changed and asked to change a shell to /sbin/sh.

After that it tries to go to single user mode but again it encounters the problem. The problem is that "dld.sl is not found along with Alert Level 12 = software failure.

Is there any way to resolve this problem? Please help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

Hi

It looks like a disk / lvol problem,
insert either ignite tape or install cd.

- stop the boot process do not interact with ipl and the do a "sea" (search) and identify either tape or CD/DVD drive and boot from there.

Mount each Lvol in turn and look out for errors / problems.

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

Hi

What is hapening is that the system is not mounting /bin and so these error occur. The root passwd error is that it cannot find the path to roots shell /bin/ksh.

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

root's shell is /bin/sh and this is a shell that uses shared library's which is the reason why the dynamic library loader dld.sl is invoked. Since dld.sl is in the /usr filesystem and /usr is not mounted yet, this fails.

root's shell must be a statically linked shell located in the root filesystem. The default is /sbin/sh.

Either you restore a make_recovery image or try to fix the problem with the support/recovery CD. The latter is a bit sophisticated though and I recommend to open a call with the HP Response Center.

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

Hi,

Sounds like the '/sbin/sh' file is either
corrupted or missing...... I would suggest
that you try and boot off your ignite tape
and then try to recover. Why was your system
rebooted in the first place ?

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

Hi,
can you mount /usr,/var/?
then do vipw to edit password file and change the roor shell to /sbin/sh.

Re: Boot failure on hpux 11.0

HI there again,

I could be able to boot from install CD but while trying to mount /usr filesystem and other logical volume, mount command throws an error that "vxfs" file system is not supported.

is there anyway to mount root file system from INSTALL cd?
