Boot into Maintenance Mode

We have a system that we added some SCSI disk to, and was copying data to when after about 2 hours the server locked up..
I have not been able to reboot the server, or to reboot into single user mode successfully, the server starts the load of the kernel, then locks up again....
Is there a way to boot the server into some sort of maintenance mode, or from CDROM and then mount file systems to try and find what is causing the problem ??

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

hi,

it all depends upon which server model you have and which the OS is to help much further

have you tried LVM maintenance mode

from isl on parisc machine

ISL>hpux -lm

or ISL on integrity

ISL>boot lm

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

The server is running 11.11 and is PA-RISC server.... It is also using Veritas VXVM for the OS and NOT LVM.....

I didn't try the previous kernel, not thinking it could be a kernel problem as a kernel hasn't been created sine the last maintenance patches were applied about 3 months ago..

Do you get any errors? Does it do a crash dump?

What model server?

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

from isl, try:

ISL> hpux -vm

this will get vrts vol mgr up and running for maintenance.

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

Boot with vmunix -vm!

Then use vx_emerg_start to start the diskgroup. It might be necessary to clean a volume/group state with vxmend etc.

My 2 cents,
Armin

And now for something completely different...

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

Hi,

(1) Try to login with your console ip.
(2) Depending upon your model you will get "MP" and "GSP" prompt, select the "CO" option and reboot the server.
(3) Interrupt the booting sequence.
(4)Intereact with IPL > y
(5) ISL> hpux -lm (you will be in Maintenance mode.

Subodh.

Re: Boot into Maintenance Mode

Something must of clobered the server... I can't get into Single user mode, backup kernel, or into hpux -vm....

I guess it's rebuild time...
