We are running a 2 node tru cluster with version 5.1 A.
The patch kit installed is Patch kit 4. Now we want to install the patch kit 6.So we need to backup the system as precation.
Iam trying to use btcreate to do the bootable tape and backup.
The btcreate finally says, it has created bootable tape , but we get errors as follows,
*** PERFORMING KERNEL BUILD ***

The new kernel is /sys/BWGC559.BOOTABLE/vmunix

The /dev/MAKDEV is existing. Can sonebody help me with this problem.
One more question, btcreate and restoration will work with cluster in case patch kit installation fails????????????

Re: Btcreate Help.
I don't believe btcreate works in a clustered environment...
Just backup your environment in the normal fashion, with vdump, in case you need to revert after the patch kit installation.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Rob

Re: Btcreate Help.
I solved the problem with MAKEDEV by adding /dev/MAKEDEV in mfs.
But the information that btcreate will not work in clustered environment is a set back.
I am able to create bootable tape with node 1 of cluster without any problem.
I have already taken vdump of following in the cluster.
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
cluster_root#root 2048000 265477 1752344 14% /
root1_domain#root 262144 40509 216640 16% /cluster/members/member1/boot_partition
cluster_usr#usr 5120000 2358781 2723920 47% /usr
cluster_var#var 3072000 2026534 1030032 67% /var
Can anyone help me, how can i boot the system and restore from vdump.
Thanks & Regards,
Bhaskaran

Re: Btcreate Help.
Then use the command dn_setup -install_tape, after that, you can do vrestore to your disks.
For detailed information see Tru64 UNIX - AdvFS Administration, Recovering Data from a Corrupted root Domain

Re: Btcreate Help.
If you start the X-gui you will get a warning.
If you really want a bootable tape you can try booting from de factory installed unix disk wich you used to create the cluster
and start btreate from there.
If you really want you can access the clusterdisks from here and adjust fslist to backup cluster_root, cluster_var, root1, root2 etc.
(the full cluster must be shut down for this).
but you don't need really this.
You juist need a full backup of the OS (all OS filesystems) and a media to boot from.
The full backup can be made from the clusternode and bootable media can be the CDrom or the factory installed disk.
so i don't think there's need to boot from tape.

Re: Btcreate Help.
Thank you for the information.
But iam able to use btcreate in one node and take backup of cluster#root, cluster#var, cluster#usr. And the btcreate finally says, bootable tape is created.
I have attached the btcreate details.
Do you mean to say that i will not be able to restore properly.??? or will not be able to boot properly???
Thanks & Regards,

SolutionYou will not be able to restore (and boot) properly after btrestore because of "h" partition of member boot disks. That partition is CNX partition.
Restorin TRU64 cluster is not trivial, it is very complicated!
Take a look at attached file.

Re: Btcreate Help.
sorry i misread your question and i missed your second post while typing my reaction.
offcourse the tape will be bootable, but the restore of the disks won't be simple.
Vladimirs remark about the CNX partition is somthing to be aware of.
thanks for the points though.

Re: Btcreate Help.
Thank you very much for that useful article.
Eventhough iam little bit confused about restoration, I can be a little proactive by adding another disk to be recognized, before we start the patch kit installation.
