CDE mortal account

hi,
i am trying to use the cde to log as a non-root, it fails with the following error:
*** ERROR(4): dtsession: PID 7765: Tue Jun 07 20:47:07 2011
The ToolTalk session server (ttsession) could not be started. This
indicates that either ToolTalk is not installed or that it is not
installed correctly on this machine. Please see your System
Administrator.
*** [268]

however, if i try to log as root, i have no problem;
/etc/hosts and netconf are the same,
if i do nslookup it does reply with the correct hostname.

do you have any idea of what is going on?

appreciate your help,

thank you,
./antonio/.

Re: CDE mortal account

Try executing:

/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt

It does a bunch of checks on CDE and might show you some problems...

Re: CDE mortal account

hi Duncan,

i did run and came up with some warnings and no errors, but it is strange that as root i am able to have the cde, but as any other user, i am not.
ps. i did give you only 8 pts, because i do not want this to show as solved, i will assign more points when done,
thank you for your help,
./antonio/.

But you want to keep them secret?

It may be wrong, but not inconceivable. I
can _imagine_ any number of permission
problems which might cause this behavior, but
some actual evidence of something would
probably be more useful than my guesswork.

Is there anything interesting in any log
files? (Or would those be secret, too?)

I'd trade Forum points for some useful
information any time.

Re: CDE mortal account

Steven,

1. no there is no secret, just that most of the information that comes out of the dr_dt are related to the list of patches (approx. 1000) and i believe there are not relevant to this error.
2. as you, i would change points for any relevant information on the forum, which from your post i could not find any, but hey, here it goes points to you too.
3. there are no error/ there are warnings, and the warnings that i have are in the same as i receive from another system where these problems do not occur, actually both systems are a clone of each other. from the hpvm.
for example, on /tmp
WARNING: The /tmp directory is not properly
configured. The current configuration is:
permissions = drwxrwxrwt
owner = root
group = root
For HP CDE to function correctly, it should be a
directory with the following configuration:
permissions = drwxrwxrwx
owner = bin
group = bin

thank you for your reply,
./antonio/.

Re: CDE mortal account

Hi antonio,

How about trying what the warning states. And even if there is an implication of turning ownershinp from root to bin, it doesn't matter as it's on the scratch space /tmp.

Re: CDE mortal account

hi Ismail,

i did that and the problem remains. the stick bit did not make difference.

i appreciate your suggestion and the previous repliers, i do not want to dedicate any more time to this, so i will re-create the hpvm and i am closing this thread.

thank you all,
