CDROM device not accessible on Alpha 4000

I get the following error, when I try to boot a CD for installing Tru64 on an Alpha 4000.

P0>>> boot dka500

DKA500.5.0.1.1 has no media present or is disabled via the RUN/STOP switch.

What must I do?

Re: CDROM device not accessible on Alpha 4000

Ensure that you media is correct. Try reading the cdrom in another server.

Ensure that you are specifing the correct cd rom device, use

>>> show dev

To identify the cdrom device.

If your media is correct and you cd device is correctly specified, maybe your cd drive is damaged and should be replaced.

Re: CDROM device not accessible on Alpha 4000

This message indicates bad or dirty CD ROM drive.
I have seen this message a lot of times.
First try to clean it.
In case of same error, replace the CD ROM drive.

Hi,

thanks for your answer.
The devicename is correct.

After several error messages (5 -7)
DKA500.5.0.1.1 has no media present or is disabled via the RUN/STOP switch.

it boots. I installed the firmware Update CD
when I tried to install Tru64 the same. The
installation went on until I got an error

Hard Error detected
Hardware ID=-67
DEC RRD45
Active CCB at time of error
CCB request completed with an error
Error, exception, or abnormal condition

NOT READY _ Logical unit is NOT ready

cam_logger:SCSI event packet hardware_id=-67
cam_logger:hardware_id=-67 bus 0 target 5 lun 0

cdisk_complete

The eroor occurs at the same place in the installation.

Greetings
Tom

As I said, you have problem with your CD ROM drive.
Your post proves my theory.
First clean it, and in case of same problem, replace the CD ROM drive.

As it workds 'a little bit' the device name and software stuff must be right.

Do you have an alternative CDrom drive to hook up?

Intermittent problems could be a bad electrical connection on older systems, so you might want to unplug and re-plug the cable to the cd at cd and at originating end
(or pop and reseat the package if applicable).
More likely is a dirty or damaged optical/mechanical part.
My first trial would be to get one of those pressure air can and try blowing clean the inside of the drive. Next step could be a lens cleaner disk, but I've never used one myself, opting for replace if a simple squirt of air an a rubbing of the CD did not fix it.

Hein.

I believe the question was:
"What must I do?"
I suspect that each and every of those answers was 100% correct. It just was not the answer the author wanted to hear.

This is just a 'social' observation.
Not aimed towards Tom as a person, just abusing him as an example of something I see all the time in the point assignments for the reply. Sorry Tom!

Along the same lines, some users assign 10 points to each and every answer. I actually find that a bigger problem. Bigger than not assigning point even as it seems to promote 'me too' reponses well after the question is answered
(Note, my duplicate response was started when Vladimir's reply was not yet posted)

From the forum guidelines:

o N/A: The answer was simply a point of clarification to my original question

o 1-3: The answer didn't really help answer my question, but thanks for your assistance!

o 4- 7: The answer helped with a portion of my question, but I still need some additional help!

o 8-10: The answer has solved my problem completely! Now I'm a happy camper!

Met vriendlijke groeten,
Hein.
