Shalom,

The documents say this upgrade can be done.

The procedure is pretty simple, you just boot the system off the new OS media and proceed through the GUI.

In practice, I found the end result very unsatisfying. I could not update the systems with yum. There was a whole host of troubles, that led me to go back and do a cold install from scratch.

Hi Steven,

So you are strictly not recommending to go for OS upgrade, am I correct?

Re: Can we upgrade straightly from RHEL 4 to RHEL 5.3

Yes,

The upgrade blew up a half dozen systems in my home based lab, forcing me to do double work.

I tried for 4 hours to get a system working after the upgrade with a simple yum list command and failed.

For me this is like upgrade-ux on HP-UX, simply not worth the trouble.

I've done it and had it work, but not with enough reliability the be comfortable.

Re: Can we upgrade straightly from RHEL 4 to RHEL 5.3

I just did an upgrade from RHEL4.7 to RHEL 5.4 two days ago. Boot from the installation media and at the initial prompt use the keyword "upgradeany". It should be downhill from there.

Be aware that an upgrade will run longer than an install. If you use the DVD image you can get it started and walk away. (My last upgrade ran for about six hours but I think a SAN problem slowed my writes down to a crawl.)
