i think this is not right. well it's only a test machine but I have another machine with /stand as hfs only. i think you can only use vxfs for /stand if you're using ia-64

Only if the box is Itanium can /stand be vxfs.
Now the question about trying to turn a file system backwards.....mmmmm...I don't think so, but I may be mistaken. It is my understanding that moving a file system forward on version is a noway back. Unless of course you rebuild the box from recovery that is prior to changing the f/s.
