Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

Hi,

Recently i have changed one network adapter from one slot to another in rx6600 server.
OS HP Unix 11.31.

After changing the slots the lan number got changed for some network interface as given below.

Before Changing Card slot
0/7/1/0/4/0 lan0
0/7/1/0/4/1 lan1
0/7/1/0/6/0 lan2
0/7/1/0/6/1 lan3
0/4/2/0 lan4
0/4/2/1 lan5

After changing card slot
0/4/2/0 lan4
0/4/2/1 lan5
0/7/1/0/4/0 lan6
0/7/1/0/4/1 lan7
0/7/1/0/6/0 lan8
0/7/1/0/6/1 lan9

How can i go back to the previous stage without changing the slot.

can somebody help?
Thanks and Regards,
Manoj K

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

Shalom,

You don't.

lan numbers are assigned by the system and we adjust our systems to this fact, we don't adjust the system to pick the lan number we want.

You can take out the /etc/ioconfig file and at boot it will reconfigure.

The results are random and the possible loss of system is high.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

Well, I would think that the easiest would be to just reassign your IPs to the lan interface you want,i.e if your primary lan was lan0, just change the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file to reflect lan6 as the primary.

Or you could use ioconfig to rename the device. Either way you would probably have to reboot the server. You can do a search inthe forums for ioconfig to get a better idea of how to use it. I have to find my notes.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

As you have experienced, HP-UX device name persistence is based (in part, there is also a "when it was added" component) on HW path and card type. This allows one to replace a "failed" card with one of the same type and not get a device rename.

However, it does mean that if you move a card from one slot to another (thus changing the HW path) new names are assigned.

The only way to change them is the aforementioned ioconfig path, which should be undertaken with care.

See this

Do you really need to change the lan name, its better if you just assign the IPs again, I suppose that simple.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

Hi All,

The Server is configured in HP Serviceguard Cluster with Oracle RAC.

So just changing IP will not work for me.

With ioconfig how can i achieve this. We don't want to do any modification in Sg and RAC level.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

Hmm, given that "remove the ioconfig file" has been mentioned I better expand on device naming in HP-UX.

Starting from square one, devices will be named in discovery order - that is to say, they will be named based on the order in which HP-UX walks the I/O bus/busses.

However, once named, a devices name is "permanent." So, if you *add* another set of devices they will be named starting from where the names left-off, in bus walk order.

So, at this point, the names of the devices may not be "purely" in bus walk order - it depends on when/where devices were added.

If you now remove the ioconfig file, you have blown away all knowledge of device names. Devices will now be named in bus walk order.

This may not match what you built-up before.

another parallel thread for this

Rick I remember we used to change device names with dsfmgr online with Tru64, I suppose it was becuase they had a hardware DB.Do we have anything like that in HPUX well I have not come across any.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

I have never had to alter an ioconfig file (man ioconfig) myself, but do recall seeing references to the "there be dragons here" ways of doing it. probably unsupported. Caveat Web Searcher.

Re: Changing lan name - eg: lan6 to lan0

I've used the attached steps a couple of times to rename devices with great success. But as stipulated in the first paragraph "read it carefully".
