DDS4 (C5686) for Tru64 v.4.0

I have installed a DDS4 tape drive to a DS20E AlphaServer that run under Tru64 v.4.0.f UNIX.

I have all the configuration switches to ON except 3 and/or 8 to OFF.

Although the drive is obtainable with sh dev
from SRM prompt with and
from UNIX the mt -f /dev/rmt0h report
a unit status with mt_erreg = 0 when we use the tar -tvf /dev/rmt0h command, the UNIX output with I/O errors.

Have you ever face such case?

Any idea to sucessfully write / read on DDS4 tape drives at Tru64 v.4.0.f?

Thank you in advance,

Re: DDS4 (C5686) for Tru64 v.4.0

Was the device properly identified when the system booted up? Can you show us the boot message from /var/adm/messages?

How did you create the device special file for /dev/rmt0h?

Are there any error messages in the error log?

Re: DDS4 (C5686) for Tru64 v.4.0

What is the output of:

scu show edt

Can you see the tape device?

Check with uerf or dia the name of the tape device:

uerf -R -r300

To simplify the configuration, you can try booting the genvmunix kernel and compile again to generate the right device special file:

boot -fi genvmunix
bcheckrc
lmf reset
doconfig
(Select all options if you are not sure)
(Do not edit the configuration file)
## Copy the new kernel
cp /vmunix /vmunix.bak
cp /path/to/new/kernel /vmunix
reboot
Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Info for Han (every time that tar -cvf or tvf /dev/rmt0his executed the SCSI bus is reset)

The /dev/rmt0* files are deleted before
DDS4 drive installation.
Systenm created them after alphaserver reboot.

Re: DDS4 (C5686) for Tru64 v.4.0

Whoa! A V4.0F TruCluster Product Server. I never believed I would hear from one of those again. You must love pain! ;-)

There clearly seems to be something wrong with ITPSA5. Unfortunately I don't see that bus anywhere. Unless that's an old V4.0F bug and they really mean scsi5, in which case it would be the bus that has the new tape drive.

The tape drive is recognized as tz46. So normally the device would have been created by /dev/MAKEDEV tz47. I'm not sure if V4.0F did that automatically. I don't believe it does, but I'm not sure after such a long time. You could try again by deleting all the tape device special files (rm /dev/{,n}rmt0*) and re-creating them with the above command.

The output from "scu show edt" didn't see the device however. That's suspicious. You could try to scan that bus and then show what's on it, e.g.

scu
scu> scan edt bus 5
scu> show edt bus 5
scu> sbtl 5 6 0
scu> show inq
scu> show pages
scu> quit

It could very well be that this device just doesn't work on V4.0F.
