Ciao
HP-UX 11.31 on ia64 Itanium , last patch applied on 2012 .....
Problem : I have replaced a failed HD with a different one but now the new one is not seen by the OS.
I have tried many things (for example I have removed stale devices) but the new HD still remain a ghost .... may be a missing device driver for the new disk or whatelse ?
Thanks in advance for the support !!
Marco

Re: DISK NOT CONFIGURED
I am by no means an expert, but I sounds you need to use this manual.

Re: DISK NOT CONFIGURED
Looks like you replaced a SAS with a SATA disk, this is probably not supported.
Without knowing your server model I can't tell for sure.
In fact you cannot mirror SAS to SATA as a hardware RAID.
Try
# saconfig /dev/ciss0
to get more information.
Since the controller is obviously configured in HBA mode, you should see all disks in ioscan.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: DISK NOT CONFIGURED
Thanks Torsten
I have had the same doubt about the disk type (SAS vs SATA), so yesterday I have "found" the command that manage the SA Controller, some command output is in the attachment.
Anyway a quick check can confirm your doubt ....the new disk is a SATA one ...
Anyway I am not using the SAS "logical drive" infact I am using the mirroring capability of the LVM for the RAID 1.
I have read that when a "logical drive" is used all HDs must be of the same type ^1 (all SAS or all SATA) but it is not clear to me if it is possible to mix them if I use them with the LVM RAID.
The HD is recognized by the SAS controller but not by the OS ...why ?

Ciao
Marco
EDIT : machinfo output attached ;-)
PS : Thanks also to gsb_2 for the manual ;-)

Re: DISK NOT CONFIGURED
Thanks again Torsten
I wonder if the only support is SAS drives is a "constraint" of the SA Controller (HW, firmware or configuration) or of the HP-UX OS (configuration, patches ...) ?
I need to clarify the fact in order to return the HD ...the best thing would be a document reference for this.

Marco

Solutionthey never tell what is not supported, but tell what is supported. you will find only sas drives as supported, maybe sata drives are "blocked" by the firmware. these servers have different firmware for smartarrays compared to proliants

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: DISK NOT CONFIGURED
Before installing the correct disk, make sure to read the LVM admin guide very carefully!
Several steps are needed (redirect device file, partition disk, etc).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
