DL360G5 CentOS 5.4 Grub fails
I have 2 disks configured,
/ on /dev/cciss/c0d0p1
swap /dev/cciss/c0d0p2
/admin on /dev/cciss/c0d1p1
for a quick recovery I made a tarball of '/' on the admin partition. To restore I just recreate the partitions, format, untar the file and run grub.
A quick test of the restore identified a failure of grub to reinstall the mbr. Ive followed Document ID: emr_na-c01729811-2 but I'm getting
grub --batch --device-map=/mnt/sysimage/boot/grub/device.map --config-file=/mnt/sysimage/boot/grub/grub.conf --no-floppy
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
checking if /boot/grub/stage1 exists = no
checking /grub/stage1 exists = no
Error 2: Bad file or directory type
I also ran
# grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0
and I get the error:
The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly
The only way we could find to recover was to re-install a bootable centos via the dvd then boot the dvd into linux rescue and then untar back into the / partition.
Why is grub failing at stage1 on this P400i controller? I also have a HP SAS3801-HP HBA card and a gig ethernet card installed.
When networking is restored(bonded config on a cisco switch I'll add the config files.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: DL360G5 CentOS 5.4 Grub fails
Shalom Paul,
I recently recovered a server by using grub.
Its merely a problem of how you are using the command.
See this thread:
