Re: Disable the HP Aries emulation on ia64
bullz,
Allow me to introduce you to 'google'.
It is new-fangled way to find information about 'stuff' (car, computers, your grandma, and yes... aries). It's well worth getting into.
Using the very same browser you use to compose this topic, type 'www.google.com' into the 'address bar' heck, there may even be a special button for it.
Now type in that very question. "What is HP Aries emulation?"
Guess what... that answer just pops out!
"Aries ├в emulate PA-RISC applications on IA-64
DESCRIPTION
Aries is a binary emulator that transparently emulates 32-bit and 64-bit HP-UX PA-RISC applications on HP-UX IA-64 machines. Aries is transparent in that: ...."
"2) How to disable it?"
Admittedly google has trouble with this query, not know what 'it' refers to.
But if you read up on a couple of answers to the first question, you'll see there is nothing to disable really. Just do not run PA executables. I suppose that for desperated cases you could consider moving (mv) the Aries libraries away, but that may cause problem if an unanticipated (system?) component needed it after all
Yes, i'm pulling your lag a little. You deserved it!
What problem are you really trying to solve?
(homework? system performance? system security?)
If you have SPECIFIC question about Aries, please do follow up and we'll try to help, without poking fun at you (much).
Best regards,
Hein.

I here I thought that I answered the questions perfectly AND provided free bonus information!
Oh well,
No sense of humor :-)
Cheers,

Re: Disable the HP Aries emulation on ia64
As Hein asked, why? If you just want to find the processes, you can use file(1) to search for PA executables.
Also, if you disable it, you may prevent some critical system process from working? And you may want to do this on a test system first.
You can probably disable it by renaming the "pa_boot" ones of these 4 files:
/usr/lib/hpux32/pa_boot32.so
/usr/lib/hpux32/aries32.so
/usr/lib/hpux64/pa_boot64.so
/usr/lib/hpux64/aries64.so
(I wouldn't recommend this at all!)

Re: Disable the HP Aries emulation on ia64
This is recommended due DB installation problem (DB patch 10204).
Serious apologies for the sort note, i have no idea about "HP Aries emulation" and how to disable it

SolutionDo you have a link for this? What I suggested wouldn't be supported and I can't see anyone suggesting it.
>i have no idea about "HP Aries emulation" and how to disable it
Aries(5) is how you can run PA executables on Integrity.

Re: Disable the HP Aries emulation on ia64
?
Let's say in easy words, it "emulates" a RISC processor in a Itanium machine in order to run RISC binaries on the new CPU.
IMHO it is a bit of unkind to give 0 points to somebody who was trying to help you.
Finally, if you want to run RISC binaries (do you?) on an ia64 system, you need aries.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Disable the HP Aries emulation on ia64
there is an Oracle metalink doc that recommends disabling Aries (without stating how to do it!) The doc has a metalink doc ID of 549908.1
Obviously can't link to it from here as its in metalink.
Reading it, it appears to state that if the Oracle Universal Installer starts with Aries enabled it thinks the box is PA rather than IA and then trys to load a .sl shared lib rather than a .so shared lib. The whoile things sounds a bit fishy to me... I might just ask a Q internally about it...
