Disk management in HPUX11i v3

Hi All,

I have used HPUX 10.20, 11.00 and 11.11 only.

Now i have to work in HPUX 11i V3.

I found some information about disk and VG that differs from older version.

Please find the attachement for details.

Re: Disk management in HPUX11i v3

On v3 the root disk is sliced into three partitions:
- p1 is the EFI boot partition
- p2 is the actual HPUX OS partition
- p3 is a support tools partition (offline diagnostics tools can go here)

So the PV for the os is indeed partition 2 of the root disk.

Also check out the "New" way of this ioscan command:
ioscan -funNCdisk

A good doc on the renewed storage stack in v3 is at "http://docs.hp.com/en/MassStorageStack/The_Next_Generation_Mass_Storage_Stack.pdf

Hi:

You're are looking at an Itanium server where the boot disk is "sliced" (the "s"). There are any number of documents to acquaint you with HP-UX 11iv3 here:

Re: Disk management in HPUX11i v3

Shalom,

Just went through this myself, in spite of having some 11.31 time.

What was once invisible, in the PA-RISC world, and used very little space, now uses a little more space and is visible.

On most of the 11.31 systems here, the actual OS goes in p2, the other two as noted are for EFI and bood loader.

EFI is necessary to help the OS talk to the hardware and do useful things like booting.

Re: Disk management in HPUX11i v3

Hi:

It irritates me no end to see what is supposed to be propriety HP documentation copied and dispersed on the Internet. I refer to the PDF at:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/4379515/Itanium

This appears to be a verbatim copy of a chapter in HP's Software Recovery Handbook, which in part reads, "THE SOFTWARE RECOVERY HANDBOOK IS HERE MADE AVAILABLE TO HP CONTRACT CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR INTERNAL USE ONLY AND ON THE CONDITION THAT NEITHER THE SOFTWARE RECOVERY HANDBOOK NOR ANY OF THE MATERIALS IT CONTAINS IS PASSED ON TO ANY THIRD PARTY."

See:

Re: Disk management in HPUX11i v3

Hi All,

I have two questions:

1) So you are telling that in integrity servers, the disks will be shown as /dev/disk/disk3 not as /dev/dsk/cXtXdX.

but in PA-RISC, it will be shown as /dev/dsk/cXtXdX

2) The three partitions (p1, p2 and p3) are created automatically while installing new OS?

3)How to see the size of the P1 and P3 from hpux (with in OS).

4)LVM concept in 11.31 is same as 11.11?

5)can we use /dev/rdisk/disk2 instead /dev/disk/disk2 (it is being used in my server) to create a PV?

6)in integrity can i use /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0 to create a PV?

Hi (again):

No, you have six (6)!

No, not necessarily; read on.

Yes.

> 3)How to see the size of the P1 and P3 from hpux (with in OS).

You don't.

> 4)LVM concept in 11.31 is same as 11.11?

Yes,

Yes.

Yes.

There are a great number of documents on the HP web about 11iv3 and its new features. Relative to this question you have posted, you might begin with:
