Disk replacement

Hi,

I am new to the HP-UX. I findout some i/o errors on database side on two lvs these are in seperate disks. Can you give me the advice what is the better way
1. disks replacement after thar restore the data.
OR

2. give the newfs command on lvs. and restore these lvs only. what is the better way.


I didn't get any stale lv's in these disks. So please give me the sugesstion.

Give me the commands syntax also from first to last.

how to check the disk status is available or not?

I give this command
vgdisplay /dev/dsk/cxtxdx
volumegroup: does not exist in the "/etc/lvmtab" file

vgdisplay: Cannot display volume group "/dev/dsk/cxtxdx



what is the meaning of the above error messages . Please explain me Iam getting confusion.

Wrong use!

# vgdisplay vg01

you need to specify the VG name!

my colleague told me that clean the lv's by using newfs command after restore the data.

please give me the detail procedure for this senario.

first you have to ensure if the disk is bad, then follow the steps to replace it.

I don't know what your system says about your I/O errors, so I cannot give you more ...

How can I say disk bad . I didn't get any stale partitions. In My DBA team get i/o errors on two lv's of different disks.

I have one dought we can rebuild the lv by using newfs.

i didn't destroy the data on that lv. just i give newfs it rebuild with empty data. is it possible?

I'm really not sure what you want to "repair" using newfs.

Did you search the syslog file before for related errors?

Did you check your disk with "dd"?

Example:


# dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t5d0 of=/dev/null bs=1024k

iam getting this error

Disk at hardware path : Media failure


Description of Error:

The device was unsuccessful in reading or writing data for the current I/O
request due to an error on the medium. The data could not be recovered.

Probable Cause / Recommended Action:

Reformatting the medium may fix the problem.

Alternatively, the medium in the device is flawed. If the medium is
removable, replace the medium with a fresh one.

Alternatively, if the medium is not removable, the device has experienced
a hardware failure. Contact your HP support representative to have the
device checked.

if the disk is bad then the server is hang when i give the dd command.

So any alternate command to check the disk is good. and please confirm me if i give newfs on lv without destroy the data it rebuild the newfs is it possible.

newfs WILL destroy the data on this lv.
