I have created a user profile in the passwd file manually and the directory of that user. Why I got the owner equal to the UID for the directory and files. I can't change the owner to the login name. In sam, it comppliants that there is no such user.
System: HPUX, N-class, OS 11.00
Thanks in advance,
YC

SolutionThis is just the point, why you should use the adduser or SAM user definition. These programs keep an overview of all users. Do yourself a favour.
Delete that line from the /etc/passwd adn create the user with SAM. That is the easiest way and the least painful.

Re: Doubts about passwd file, chown and sam
First of all your message is in wrong forums.
Are you using NIS? (if you are using nis you have to edit /etc/passwd file on server)
what happens when you type "id username"

Re: Doubts about passwd file, chown and sam
That seems that your entry in /etc/passwd containing errors and the system is not able to handle the entry correspending to that new user.
Try to respect the syntax for manuelly changing the /etc/passwd.
May you please giving us this entry ? this would be useful.

Re: Doubts about passwd file, chown and sam
Run /usr/sbin/pwck. This will tell you if there's anything wrong with the password file's format.
