EMS Alert on N4000

We have N4000 Server with HP-UX 11.11 OS.
The Server has 2 power supplies installed in it and the slot#1 is empty.
But we keep geting EMS alerts for this non-existent power supply.
Please advise if we can somehow supress this alert.

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

I am not an hardware expert or anything close, but EMS' functionality is to find and report any hardware issues that you might have and missing one out of 3 power supplies on an N-class machine means jeopardy and will be reported. N-Class cna function with 2 power supplies but losing one of those means a sudden crash and this condition gets reported. If you are keen about this is not an important situation, you may contact HP hardware support and they *might* tell you a way to suppress these alerts but I am not sure if this is at all possible

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

Install in slots 0 and 1 and you won't get more messages.

Hope this helps!

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

Many thanks Mel and Torsten.
If I decide to move the Power supply from Slot 2 to Slot 1 will this need a downtime of the server. Will the server sustain power with one Power Supply till the second power supply is swapped.

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

hi,

no you need downtime as you have have no redundancy power, with only two installed. if one fails the system will go down quickly!

I would personally just install a third, as they are reasonably cheap nowadays as the system is so old.

If you do decide to swap it over bear attention to switch on the front of the power supply before you remove it. Its a small toggle swicth which should have it position swicthed first to be correct for removal then when re-inserted in the othwer slot switch it back to the origianl position

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

Power was always a mystery to me in L- and N-class servers.

Normally you connect one half to a power source, the other half to another source, but how to do this with 3 PSU??? I doubt about this solution since more than 10 years...

However, similar to the L-class the server needs 2 or 3 PSU, depending on the configuration. If only half loaded, 2 PSUs are already N+1.

But since the load order is 0,1,2 I assume you get an error if there is a gap (such as in your configuration).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

This means the external SC10 disk enclosure has no power on one of the power supplies!

Hope this helps!

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

And by the way, your diagnostics version is from June 2003 - time to upgrade!

The BCC firmware of the SC10 looks old, consider to update this too!

Hope this helps!

Re: EMS Alert on N4000

Hi,
the Data Centre have confirmed that the power supplies of the External Disk Storage have power plug in to them.

I too see that all is fine using the cstm command.

I've attached the cstm output.

Not sure still why I get this EMS alert

Please asvise
