Firefox doesn't start anymore

Hi,

(PA-RISC/UX-11.11i) After installing Gimp, I noticed Firefox doesn't start anymore. Removed Gimp and all dependencies, but still nothing. Removed and reinstalled Firefox, again nothing. No error message either.

Can someone help me out pls?

Thanks.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Maybe you removed some dependencies?

Any messages?

Did you try this:

http://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/try.do?productNumber=HPUXFIREFOX

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

I don't get any messages at all. No core dumps. I've redownloaded Firefox using another computer, copied it to the PA-RISC, removed and reinstalled it. No go.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Can you see it is "ps" output? Maybe it runs on another DISPLAY? ... Just an idea ...

Hope this helps!

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

The output of "ps -ef | grep -i firefox" shows no Firefox at all. Other ideas?

Hmm, I would have thought these two would fix it. Or at least there should be an error message.

Do you have a system where it still works?
You could try using tusc to see where they diverge or if any errors before it exits.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Thanks for the tusc hint, but seeing the many options that can be given: do you have a suggestion which one(s) to use?

Use these to start:
tusc -fp -ea -o tusc.out firefox ...

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

OK, now I have a problem. It seems I don't have tusc installed, and I don't have a supplemental CD. I found the options on the internet. Can I get tusc from the internet? (where)

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

ok, installed tusc. Now I get a message:

#(firefox-bin:3909): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

This is odd, because previously I didn't need to set a display.

Knowing nothing, I'd say that what would
_really_ be odd would be if you could get
Firefox (or any other graphical application)
to work if you did _not_ have DISPLAY set
properly.

What seems more likely to me would be that
your DISPLAY was being set automatically
(somehow) before, but isn't now.

echo $DISPLAY

What are you sitting at, an HP-UX
workstation, some PC running some X server,
a vt220, ...? If you're not sitting at an
HP-UX workstation, then how is what you are
sitting at connected to the HP-UX system,
Telnet, SSH, serial line, ...?

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

It is a C3700 PA-RISC workstation running CDE. To run firefox, I start a terminal en run a simple script (./startfirefox that just contains "/opt/firefox/firefox &" without quotes) that hasn't changed since I installed firefox the first time.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Well, we can worry forever about how DISPLAY was being magically set before - or, we can just go ahead and fix this problem:

echo $DISPLAY

(should return nothing)

export DISPLAY=(ipaddress):0.0
./startfirefox

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

With DISPLAY set like that, I still get the same Gtk error.

Like what? Did you type what patrick wrote verbatib or did you put the ipaddress of your workstation in place of (ipaddress)? You don't post back much information about what people are asking you!

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

First, I used the IP address:

$set DISPLAY=10.0.0.17:0.0

Then I used my little ./startfirefox script, with no result. Next, I su-ed to root, again "set DISPLAY=10.0.0.17:0.0", and used tusc with the earlier suggested options to start firefox. This gave the mentioned Gtk WARNING.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Why the "set DISPLAY" syntax? What shell are you running?

You also seem to have set the DISPLAY for your root session rather than your regular user session (if I'm reading your comments correctly).

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Sorry, "set DISPLAY" is a typo. It is "export DISPLAY". I'm running ksh.
Yes, I exported DISPLAY for both. First for the normal user, but that didn't give any response. So, in order the get output from tusc, I su-ed to root, did it again and got the Gtk WARNING.

On a local graphics console right?

Log out from CDE and login again with a new CDE session. Post the output of "echo $DISPLAY". The DISPLAY variable should already be setup and should not have to set it again. If it is not, then something is wrong in your profile or the CDE environment.

What is in the tusc.out file?

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

After re-login, "echo $DISPLAY" is "Somerset:0.0". I attached the output from tusc.out.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

Is "Somerset" your **exact** hostname?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Firefox doesn't start anymore

"hostname" gives Somerset as output.

A simple Copy+Paste of the actual command and
its actual output would be more credible.

Who sets it to that? Something in your shell
start-up stuff?

Does any other X program run this way? Say,
xclock or dtterm? (That is, is this problem
limited to Firefox, or does everything fail
when you run it from a command line?)
