Flash disk

Hi, every exports:
We had two ES40 machines with Tru64 UNIX 5.1B OS. I saw two USB devices behind the machine. My question as following : May I insert USB flash disk into the machine USB device? And may I mount it? Thank you!

You can plug it in, but it will do no good.
The only USB drivers shipping with Tru64 (and VMS) are for mouse and keyboard.

Ooops, I took a slightly older statement and used it. After i posted I rememberred that OpenVMS does have several USB drivers now.
Not that that will help you...

If I powered off the machine, and I inserted USB flash disk into the machine, then I powered on the host. How was the host's status? Was teh OS stable?

You should not need to power off the system.
USB is designed for hot-plug/unplug
operation. Of course, you're working with an
unsupported hardware configuration, so
(almost) anything could happen. It depends
on what the Tru64 USB software does with an
unrecognized/unsupported device. You'll
probably need to run the experiment to see
what will happen. Different systems may use
different USB adapter chips, so knowing what
happens on a different system type may not
tell you much about what will happen on your
system.

The fellow who works on the USB stuff in VMS
claims that different USB storage gizmos work
differently, too, so the results may also
depend on exactly which device you have.

I'd try it on my XP1000 with a cheap-Chinese
USB card (with an NEC chip) which seems to
appear as:

Jan 9 00:58:24 urtx vmunix: usb0 at pci0 slot 13
Jan 9 00:58:24 urtx vmunix: usb1 at pci0 slot 113 (slot 13, function 1)

but my USB storage gizmo is currently in the
mail (and I'd guess that your USB chip is
probably different, so my results would
probably not tell you much).

I'm sure that other people would like to be
able to use these things, too, but I get the
impression that new features for Tru64 are
not a high priority at HP these days.
