Glance, top, machinfo; confusing memory info

I have an rx5640 (IA64) and am checking the installed RAM. The reported numbers seem different, as if the server is not seeing all of it's memory. Is that possible and what can be done?

top:
Memory: 22316492K (20361420K) real, 25975652K (23634732K) virtual, 1991960K free Page# 1/55

machinfo:
Memory = 65523 MB (63.987305 GB)

glance:
Total VM : 24.7gb Sys Mem : 8.2gb User Mem: 21.9gb Phys Mem : 64.0gb
Active VM: 23.1gb Buf Cache: 32.0gb Free Mem: 1.9gb FileCache: na

Yes, it's confusing - always has been. Different tools, different views, different interpretations. Physical, virtual, total, etc.

Re: Glance, top, machinfo; confusing memory info

Hi learn hall,

Let us get the various criteria for performance monitoring into place. When you talk about commands like top and glance, they are referred to as "real time monitoring tools" which means that they give the output as of what is being used NOW. The PRESENT utilization. . The allocated space would be given by commands like swapinfo and machinfo. So if you would want to monitor stuff as of what's happening NOW, you would use top, iostat, gpm etc. If you would want to see what has been ALLOCATED, you would use commands like machinfo. Hope info helps. Don't forget to assign points

Re: Glance, top, machinfo; confusing memory info

Hi Hall,

For physical Memory Information, use machinfo and you can view it in Glance too.

Memory = 65523 MB (63.987305 GB)
Phys Mem : 64.0gb

You should read more on virtual memory management in HPUX to understand the other values and they never represent the physical memory.

You can go through top man page to see what the details on virtual , real memory details.

Thanks & Regards

Re: Glance, top, machinfo; confusing memory info

Hi,
Your system has 64 GB of physical memory. Both glance and machinfo confirms it.

Going with glance report, 8.2 GB is being used by system, 21.9 GB is being used by user processes, 32 GB for buffer cache and rest of 1.9GB physical memory is free. Sum up all of them amounts to 64Gb physical memroy.

The system has 25 GB of virtual memory configured.
