HBA

I need few details on HBA cards,
In Hp-UX to check the HBA card installed we can use
#ioscan -fnC fc
#fcmsutil /dev/fcd0

Please correct me if i am wrong.
Experts please let me know to check if HBA card has failed to detect. Troubleshooting steps that can be done from host.

Re: HBA

Talking about fibre adapters only?

Where exactly is the problem?

>> failed to detect

No driver loaded?
Do you see any "UNKNOWN" in ioscan?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HBA

Hi

You collect part and model and versions. Model and version of your box and server.

For HBA part number use
fcmsutil /dev/fc## vpd

..unless /dev/td, or tacheyon, then

swlist -l product | grep -i tach

"...failed to detect..."

Check the state / status parameter in fcmsutil

fcmsutil /dev/fc##

It will either be online or not. Online is good.

Re: HBA

Hi again

Trouble shooting steps. Usually the online confirmation is enough. You can send a echo back to the SAN to verify connectivity but this is intrusive and can only be done when the disk array is down, or something to this affect. The point is, it is intrusive and destructive.

So, trouble shooting is now by log tool, which is an error collector.

cstm<<-EOF
runutil logtool
rs
EOF

Copy and paste in and I'll go over it with you. Note: Get the start and end dates.

Do you mean not listed in ioscan?

Each troubleshooting step depends on the trouble you have ...

Re: HBA

Hi Sarwan/Jijesh..

>> If it is not listed in ioscan.
Depends on the state in ioscan.
-Not listed in ioscan might indicate HW issue.
-Present but UNCLAIMED state might refer to driver issue.

You can use following commands also to troubleshoot HBAs.
# fcmsutil /dev/td0 stat -s
# what /stand/vmunix | grep -i td <<< Check for drivers in kernel

Re: HBA

HI

If the card is listed in ioscan , you can use
ioscan -fnC fc
then for the device files that you get that is /dev/fcd0 or /dev/td0 or /dev/fclp0 you can use to see the Status of the card using

fcmsutil /dev/fcdX
fcmsutil /dev/tdX
etc

Re: HBA

Hi

If its not listed in ioscan then you have a physical problem with the board not being picked up in the i/o backplane.

If you installed this hba yourself then reread the installation procedure and try reseating the board.

Many times a board can only go into a certain slot, one that is capable of supporting it. Usually its a slot with a higher speed.

You may also have an incompatible board with your server.

a) what is the server model and o/s version?
b) what is the product number of the HBA?

You'll have to refer to the packaging or visually examine the unit yourself to find it. It will be something like, A5158A.

Re: HBA

"If it is not listed in ioscan how will we proceed and how we will come to know that which HBA was present"

If not listed in ioscan the HBA or the slot maybe dead. In this case I would expect more indicators, even a crash.

All the fcmsutil and similar tools will not help, if the HBA is dead.

If this is a new installation, I would try to re-seat the card.

If the card is working but not recognized by the OS, at minimum the firmware is aware of it.

Example - a "display fru":

...
FRU Entry # 5 :FRU NAME: Mezzanine 1 ID:08

CHASSIS INFO:

BOARD INFO:
Mfg Date/Time : 5260320
Manufacturer : QLogic
Product Name : QLogic QMH2462 4Gb FC HBA for HP c-Class BladeSystem
...

Hope this helps!

Re: HBA

Just seen today after a systemboard replacement:
A NIC shows activity (LEDs are blinking), the slot shows populated and powered in "olrad", but ioscan shows the slot as empty.

Re-seating the card was the solution!

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HBA

Sarwan,
To add with the above, If you have a bad fc card , failing or failed, you will see EMS alert , check logs at /var/opt/resmon/log/event.log for further.
- Then check with fcmsutil for status.
- A card may not failed completely may be still working for few days before it fails completely. So a proactive measure would be wise.

Re: HBA

Thanks for all your reply, If a disk from storage is not detected due to hba failure what is the work around that can be done to confirm this.

Re: HBA

Hi

First, you need to start a new thread and close this one. Its an organizational and search engine thing and lack of confusion thing.

Second, need to know you architecture. Disk array, SAN, load balancer in particular.

In most data centers the network group takes care of the SAN connectivity and zoning, whatever, if you are presenting a disk from a disk array through the SAN to a server, then there are several places along the way for you to stop and check.

For example, if you have the EMC power path load balancer, you run powermt display and all the luns from the disk array for your server are listed. Now you look at the device path and line them up in ioscan, which should also be listing out everything.

Question: Are you not seeing a lun in 'ioscan'?
