hey guys how to determine if HP-UX is using a SAN based backup tapes?

Are you refering to FC connected tape library .?

ioscan -fn tape will show the Hardware path

or ioscan -fnC tape --> look for Hardware path pointing to FC

Example:-

A full "ioscan -fn" would be better, but I'm sure 2 LTO drives are connected via a fibre channel switch, the other 2 via another switch.

0/1/1/1.0.0 looks like an internal LVD/SE DAT.
0/2/1/0.9.69.255.0.0.0, and ... .1 and 0/6/1/0.10.69.255.0.0.0, and ... .1 could be 4 separate Ultrium drives but are probably two physical drives (.0, .1) on dual fiber channel connections.
