HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

Hi,

I have a HP DLT8000 tape drive and if i do a sea on the BCH, the drive would show up. But once i got into the OS, if i do a ioscan, it wouldn't see the drive. I tried using insf -e to install the device file but that didn't help. I checked sam and the stape driver is in the system.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

Are there any devices in ioscan that show to be unclaimed?

Can you post, or attach, the output of 'ioscan -fn'?

The drive is connected to the PCI scsi interface

Re: HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

Have you verified the SCSI ID of the tape drive?  Is there a SCSI terminator attached to the drive?

Are there any errors in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log?

Re: HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

Yes i have, and there is a terminator attached to the drive.

When i check the log, i see a lot of the following:

vmunix: SCSI: Resetting SCSI -- lbolt: 661936, bus: 4

vmunix: SCSI: Reset detected -- lbolt: 661936, bus: 4

           scb -> cdb: 12 00 00 00 80 00

Do they mean anything?

Re: HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

SCSI bus resets are not good.

That indicates that there may be a problem with the tape drive.

Re: HP-UX dlt tape drive problem

Problem solved. Instead of swaping a new drive, i swapped the cable and crossed my fingers and it worked!

But here is what i don't understand - if there was a problem to the cable, how come the bch could still detect the presence of the drive but not in ioscan?

Very different code with the two interfaces. The BCH search is very primitive and does not provide any information except that there was a low level reply to a SCSI probe and a status indicating a serial device. ioscan performs SCSI ID requests and the driver is also probed for additional details, requiring a clean handshake and data transfer for the details.
