HP-UX on BL60p- installation (boot process) crashes.

I am new to HP-UX. Trying to install HP-UX 11iv2 on BL60p and getting the system crashed with no error. I tried 2 servers BL60p - results are the same for both. Kernel crashes with no error.
What could it be the cause?

hi,

first thing to check is the media?

what is the date of the os install used? looks like it was 2003 from your output. this would be an original 11.23 release possibly and not compatible with the newer hardware.

hence the crash...

The server wasnt erlesed until late 2005, I seem to remember?

try a later release if you can

And the stack trace that comes after it contains a lot of USB-related things, suggesting that the problem could be somehow related to the USB devices. Hmm...

See page 68 of the Installation Guide of the BL60p server blade:

first of all - installation media is not so old - according to INDEX file it was built
Apr 17, 2008.

And the USB port is the right one - I was able to install SUSE 10 on that server connecting to that port. I tried the other port and result is the same.

There may be no connection between what HP-UX likes and SUSE.

Are you using a standard HP-UX installation DVD or a customized Ignite-UX Golden Image?

If it's the latter, it might be that the date of the INDEX file identifies the day the Golden Image was created, not the release date of the original OS files.

HP-UX 11.23 is the *first* version of HP-UX to support USB storage devices. The older versions supported only USB keyboards and mice, nothing else.

Can you test with another USB DVD drive, preferably a different brand? I once found that a certain slim-line Fujitsu-Siemens DVD drive was completely incapable of booting a p-class blade: it simply took too much time resetting itself and detecting the disk, so the firmware timed out on the USB boot and gave up trying.

In your case the kernel is successfully loaded and started, but something goes wrong when the kernel is identifying USB devices.

I've had good results with an LG brand DVD reader/writer drive (can't remember the exact model now, sorry).

I had similar looking crashes when I tried installing one of these with a Freecom USB drive ... but the same media worked fine with a LG USB DVDRW ...

I'd echo the previous answer and if you are using up to date media try a different model of USB DVD drive.
