HP-UX system hangs on reboot

Hi,

I have been struggling with different issues on our upgrade of HP-UX 11.0 to 11.11.

At one point the upgrade did not install the LAN driver for our 100-base-T card. After some help I got it installed and just need to do a final reboot.

Right now the system hangs in bootup cycle for multi-user mode at "Configuring all unconfigured software filesets". The system will boot (thankfully) in single-user mode, however.

In the /etc/rc.log file it ends with:
Configuring all unconfigured software filesets
Output from "/sbin/rc2.d/S120swconfig start":
----------------------------
* Turning off all network based resolving services in
'/etc/nsswitch.conf'
* Setting up temporary hostname in '/etc/hosts'
* Starting temporary swagentd
* Configuring new filesets

Any ideas as to how to get the system past this?

Thanks,
Randy

Did you upgrade from 11.0 to 11.11 or did you perform a "cold/virgin/..." install?

I hope you did a few make_tape_recovery's before the upgrade.

Re: HP-UX system hangs on reboot

The upgrade may have trashed your system.

You actaully may need a nsswitch.conf file to get this thing to boot.

swagentd will not work without a nsswitch.conf file.

Re: HP-UX system hangs on reboot

My upgrade to 11.11, was done using the upgrade option with the update-ux utility.

Yes, I do have a make_tape_recovery tape and have already used in several times already for different attempts at the upgrade.

Randy,
how long is the 'Configuring new filesets' running ? do you have to stop it after 10 minutes ?

Re: HP-UX system hangs on reboot

Hi Randy,

What services were configured on your system?

If you have the backups, i would suggest for a fresh install (and not upgrade). Things will be much cleaner after a fresh install, and system will behave as expected.

Then you would have to configure the services which were running prior installation.

Re: HP-UX system hangs on reboot

Just to see how it would take to get through the stuck reboot, I left it run overnight and this morning it was still stuck.

As far as using the install method, I'm a little shy of doing so, because of third party purchased utilities that have installed themselves on the root drives.

thanks for your responses, so far.

Re: HP-UX system hangs on reboot

any chance of de-installing (swremove) the 3rd party packages ? then try again with the install. but before trying the install/upgrade, check out the dependent os files: you know.. /etc/hosts /etc/rc.config.d/netconf, /etc/services
