HP-Unix 11.31 Hard Disk Failure

Dear Mr. Torsten,

 

I would like to thank you for your effort which you put for giving an excellent reply to one of the post which was submitted on 07-25-2008 11:50 AM. Your reply to that post was really really highly appreciated, as am a newbie in this environment was desperately looking for the solution for the same problem of hard disk failure which i faced in my company.

 

FYI, I run the below commands to get the required output. Find attached the file with the complete output of SAUTIL

 

# sautil /dev/ciss3

From the output of SAUTIL, it clearly shows that the disk got failed on this we opened the request with hp-support on which we received a new peice of hd.

We replaced the old hd with the new one after that i got the below message from the output of SAUTIL

Ok, as am a newbie i need some clarifcation from the above procedure of replacing the hd on failure. Will the server needs to be restart on replacing the hd? And also as you can see that one of the disk status is UNASSIGNED instead of SPARE on this i need your valuable advice and assistance. Will be really grateful if you could please let me know the process to make that disk to be get used autoatically in such a way that if incase one of the disk fails the spared one should immediatly get active.

Hi,

 

this smartarray controller is the same as used in Proliant servers and works similar.

 

You can just replace a failed, disk, the controller will sync this disk.

 

For the UNASSIGNED drive:

This doesn't belong to a logical drive and isn't a spare.

 

To add as spare, do this (example):

 

Adding a Spare Disk Drive


# saconfig /dev/cissX -A <Logical drive #> -s
<Channel:Target> command is used to add a spare physical disk to an existing
logical drive:

# saconfig /dev/ciss7 -A 0 -s 1:3
Spare drive 1:3 added to Logical drive 0
You can add multiple spare physical disks to a logical drive, depending on the
number of physical disks in the array that are not in use.

 

In your case the logical drive is "0", disk is 2I:1:5 and controller is /dev/ciss0

Hi,

 

From the post I see that the 4th physical disk is in "Unassigned" state and would like to make it as SPARE.


internal 2I 1 5 0x5000c500235de8c1 DISK 146.8 GB UNASSIGNED


Analyzed your SAUTIL_Output.txt file and following are my observations
-> 1 Logical drive configured (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0) with first 3 physical disks participation.
-> the 4 disk (0x5000c500235de8c1) is not a part of any logical drive and hence its in UNASSIGNED state.

 

So if you would like to configure the 4 disk as SPARE disk, you would need to configure it manually.


To add spare drive to existing logical drive, use the below command syntax.


# saconfig /dev/cissX -A <Logical drive #> -s <Channel:Target>
# sautil /dev/cissX --> check if the disk is added as spare to the logical drive.

I'm extremely grateful for you for answering my questions so promptly, thanks a lot. It worked smoothely.

 

Have configured the disk as SPARE successfully.

Whats the relation between those slices and physical disks and what kind of information resides on those above disk's, will it needs to be backed up? how i can come to know the usage of those disks?

Hi Syed,

 

The sautil command provides detailed information about the Smart Array controller hardware RAID configuration, any logical drives that have been configured, and all SCSI devices that are attached to the controller.


sautil -s option provides a shorter and less detailed output.

 

In your case you have 4 internal physical disks and created a Logical drive 0 (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0) with RAID 5 configuration. This logical drive 0 (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0) is presented as a HP-UX Boot disk. 

 

The bdf command displays the amount of free disk space available on the file systems in the Boot disk (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0).

 

You can always take a backup of HP-UX boot disk using Ignite-UX utility.

 

The same data residing in the boot disk is distributed across the physical disks as per the RAID configuration.
