HP Visualize B132L Workstation

I have an HP Visualize B132L with HP-UX 10.20 that had a hard drive failure.  I have a DDS2 backup tape labeled tar.cvf./dev/rm/0mu./

I located a working hard drive same make and model.  

NEED help retoring from the tape backup.  Can anybody help????

Insert the tape into the drive, boot into the boot menu. Use "search" to find the tape (sequential device) and boot from tape. Let it run, it will boot twice (?) and the system will be restored.


This asumes it is ignite.

"tar -cvf /dev/rmt/0m /" just creates a tar archive of the system. If this is really the contents of your tape (bad situation!), you need to install your system from CD and restore the data from tape once the system is running again. So you need the install media!

Here are the steps I have taken.

Installed new hard drive.

clean Install of HP-UX 10.20

Boots up into CDE with no problem.

I am root user.

Insert tape into drive.

Do the following commands

/sbin/bcheckrc

bdf

tar -xvp

reads the tape just fine no errors. 

finishes and takes me back to the # prompt

when I do an LS I can see the directories I need have been restored.

I reboot the workstation and I get the following.

Boot:

disc(8/12.6.0.0) /stand/vmunix

3792260 + 307328 start 0x199068

I will try booting it from the tape drive and see what that does.

That means it is not a bootable tape.

In your previous response you said you were able to tar everything from the tape.  If you just executed the tar command from the prompt and it started extracting, then that also means that this isn't an Ignite tape.

If it was an Ignite tape, the initial tar extract would have failed because the first section of an Ignite tape is the boot area.  When extracting files via tar from an Ignite tape you have to skip over the boot area.  Since you didn't do that, it's not bootable.

So what can you recommend I try next.  I have 2 workstations I am trying to get back up and working. Both had failed hard drives.

I just got replacement drives for them yesterday.

I am not sure what part of the restoral process I am getting wrong.  The backup tapes appear to be in working order.

I can install HP-UX 10.20 with no problems.  CDE loads with no issues.

Does the recovery tape care what HP-UX 10.20 is on it.  When I install it, it gives me two options. I just loaded the standard install.

Any help would be great as I am at a stand still right now.

I would check now the contents of the tape and restore the data from tape to disk (tar -t...; tar -x...).

I have checked the contents of the tape and it looks good. tar -t

I am not sure what exact data needs to be restored from the tape to the disk in order to get this machine up and working.

The workstations are M&C PC's talking to HP 9000 D class servers.  This is where they get there information from.  

Im not sure where to go from here.  These machines are 14 years old and not sure how i would get these working without people like you to help.

I finally got it to work.

I found another backup tape we had and booted direct from the tape and it restored.  Just as you said. Machine rebooted 2 times and came up.  All I had to change was the IP address.
