HPU11v1, Can see SCSI tape drive in BCH menu, but not in HP-UX.
I have a rp7410 and a rp7420 server. When I connected a DDS4 drive via a SCSI cable, I see the drive in the BCH menu. But later when I go to install HPUX, the tape drive is not listed in the Hardware Summery of the HPUX installation process. Later after the HPUX is installed, the drive is not shown in "ioscan -fnC tape".
How can the drive be seen just fine in BCH, but not seen in HPUX?

Re: HPU11v1, Can see SCSI tape drive in BCH menu, but not in HP-UX.
I have seen something similar with a bad terminator and/or a bent pin (if you have 68pin connectors) - check termination and cable.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Hi Torsten,
Thank you for reply. I have connected a 2nd tape drive using a second cable and terminator. I am still getting the same result. I can see it in BCH, but not in HPUX.

I have a few more drives, cables, and terminators. I will try a few more to see if I can isolate this further.

I've tried a third drive. So now there are three drives, cables, and terminators connected. Same result.

I just tried to boot from a HPUX 11.v3 DVD to see if that we detect the tape drives. Nope.

If you have an OS installed, boot up and do an "ioscan -fn", please.
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HPU11v1, Can see SCSI tape drive in BCH menu, but not in HP-UX.
Sadly its sees nothing.
# ioscan -funC tape #
When I try to add a tape drive via SAM, its says that it needs to build the driver, it then does a shutdown -h and I have to power cycle the box to get it boot back up. I'm not sure if the tape drivers are installed or not.

My apologies, Here is what you requested.
Note: I added a fiber connected tape drive to the system and it does appear as a device. Still not sure why my SCSI tape drives do not appear.

Re: HPU11v1, Can see SCSI tape drive in BCH menu, but not in HP-UX.
There must be something wrong between controller, cable, drive and terminator ...
However, good to know you found a solution for the initial problem
/t5/System-Administration/HPUX-11-11-can-you-boot-from-a-fiber-attached-tape-drive/m-p/6896720#M489728
Hope this helps!

Torsten.
