HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Dear ITRC members,

Does any of you know if this is a supported combination, or is my only option to use the native pvlinks(with limitations on 11.23) or vxvm dmp?

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Shalom Robert,

Please submit ioscan -fnCdisk information.

I believe pvlinks will work without benefit of securepath in this combination.

I don't see a version number on securepath, that makes a difference here as well.

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Just a bit of background info.

The RX7640 is going to be used to create Virtual Machines.VM's are going to be used as Oracle DB and apps guests. VSE 3.5 is installed.

From docs.hp.com IVM release notes;
----
For optimal performance with storage intensive applications such as Oracle├В┬о, HP strongly recommends using whole disk backing stores. Virtual disks that use logical volumes or files as backing storage do not provide optimal performance for this type of application. For more information about the Integrity VM storage subsystem, see the HP Integrity Virtual Machines Installation, Configuration, and Administration manual.
----

To create a whole disk backing store for a guest on HPUX 11.23 + VSE 3.5 you need a multipath solution.

- Whole Disk
EMC PowerPath
HP Autopath/Secure Path

- LVM Logical Volume
PVLinks
EMC PowerPath
HP Autopath/Secure Path

- VxVM Logical Volume
EMC PowerPath
HP Autopath/Secure Path
Veritas DMP

- VxFS File System
PVLinks
EMC PowerPath
HP Autopath/Secure Path
Veritas DMP

http://docs.hp.com/en/T2767-90105/ch07s02.html#multipath_solutions_section

And the surprise if you look at the quickspecs of securepath.

Supported hosts platforms on HPUX 11.23;

HP K, V class, rp2400 (A-class), rp5400 (L-class), rp7400 (N-class), rp8400, HP Integrity servers: rx5670, rx2600, zx6000, rx4640, rx7620, rx8620, and Superdome server models.

Does anybody know why the RX7640 is not supported for SecurePath configurations?

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Robert-Jan,

It is, of course supported on an rx7640... it's simply that the QS haven't been updated. You'll note that the rx2660, rx3600, rx6600 and rx8640 are also not mentioned, but they are all supported.

I'll try and contact the QS owner to get it updated.

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Duncan,

Thank you for your response! We where confused after an email we got, saying this was not supported combination. He referred to this document.

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Robert-Jan,

Hmmm - same mistake in 2 places is worrying... you might want to wait whilst I just confirm it *is* an error. (Although the doc doesn't look particularly well proof-read - it mentions an rx7650 which doesn't exist!)

Re: HPUX 11.23 SecurePath RX7640

Duncan,

I have received a partial answer from HP the Netherlands. Secure Path is a working solution on the RX7640 in combination with HPUX 11.23.

For the moment this is enough for my customer, as soon as they can upgrade to 11.31 they will.

What I think is that HP should change the release notes or the documentation for either A or B;

A - certify HPUX 11.23 for Secure Path and change the release notes.

B - change the documentation on 11.23 to make sure the secure path option has limitations for certain hardware platforms. To give you a few examples VSE and MCSG documentation on getting the best performance.

Kind regards,
Robert-Jan
