HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

Hi,

I have two RP3440's running HPUX 11.11
The RP 34404's are almost the same, slightly new CPU's, but the core difference is the fibre cards.

I have ignited the slightly newer 3440 from the older 3440, all has gone well, the host name has been changed and the disk devices correct. Really pleased.

Only problem is the fibre cards are showing as unclaimed on the newer machine.

The newer machine has HP AB378-60101 cards it.

Which according to the documentation should used the "fcd" driver.

(as listed here http://docs.hp.com/en/J6374-90052/J6374-90052.pdf)

I've installed the correct driver pacakges as listed bellow

# FC-TACHYON-TL FC-TACHYON-TL,l=/,r=B.11.11.13,a=HP-UX_B.11.11_32/64,v=HP
FC-TACHYON-TL.FC-TL-KRN FC-TACHYON-TL.FC-TL-KRN,l=/,r=B.11.11.13,a=HP-UX_B.11.11_32/64,v=HP,fr=B.11.11.13,fa=HP-UX_B.11.11_64
FC-TACHYON-TL.FC-TL-RUN FC-TACHYON-TL.FC-TL-RUN,l=/,r=B.11.11.13,a=HP-UX_B.11.11_32/64,v=HP,fr=B.11.11.13,fa=HP-UX_B.11.11_32/64

however the cards cannot be seen

fc 0 0/3/1/0 td UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI-X SerialBus (10772422)
fc 1 0/4/1/0 td UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN PCI-X SerialBus (10772422)

The interesting thing here, is in the output of ioscan above it appear to be trying to use the "td" driver rather than the "fcd" driver. The more insteresting thing, in an attempt to resolve this I've removed the td driver from the kernel and made sure the fcd driver is in and it still shows it trying to use the td driver.

I can't use fcmsutil as the device files are not being created.

I'm a bit stumped at why these cards are not being seen, and why they are trying to use the td driver.

At a side issue, if I do a boot probe on the ISL I can see the disks attatched on these cards, just not from within the OS.

thanks

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

Does swlist list the FibrChanl-01 depot as installed?

Hope this helps!

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

did you check system firmware of 3440 is compatible with the adapter ? perhaps you need a firmware update.

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

ok, good call, I was (maybe wrongly) under the impression it was already up to date.

however how can I check it if I can't use fcmsutil as the device files are not there.

Is there a better way to check it (however I am expecting these to be up to date).

good call though

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

When you take an Ignite backup and restore to another system, all the drivers for the new system must be present. You can fix the problem by replacing all the fibre cards in the newer machine with the cards from the older machine.

There are two different classes of fibre cards, thus two different drivers (td and fcd). When you install from the core DVD (or golden image of the core media), all drivers are present (as of the date of that media) so most all cards will be seen. Once you get your firmware updated and drivers installed, the device files will be created automatically. And to answer the next possible question, no, the device file names will not be the same as your original system

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

According to the matrix the server must have PDC 46.34 as minimum.

This is the current version:

Please do

Re: HPUX 3440 ignite - Fibre cards unclaimed

excellent advice and information - thank you.

I can't swap the fibre cards around, and totally understand the lacking drivers, I had attempted to fix this by putting on the required drivers, however I'll check the firmware now, I tried to do this earlier, but without the device files present, couldn't see how I could do it. However, I understand you're saying I can do this from MC prompt, so I'll try that and compare the versions. Thank you for the prompts.
