Hanging User login terminals

Hi,

The users loggin terminals are in hung state for some reason. We tried killing the commands running on the hung terminals. All the process are killed however the terminal sessions are still available.

Output from command "w"
hqb255 ttyp6 11:10am353:33 -
qnf025 ttyp7 2:28pm332:40 -
hqb255 ttyp8 2:39pm2776:43 -
dhi147 ttyp9 3:22pm1343:49 -
hqb255 ttypa 3:41pm4876:33 -
gpy166 ttypb 4:35pm4797:08 -
dhi147 ttypc 4:54pm2272:43 -
gpy166 ttypd 10:49am5715:17 -
gpy166 ttype 11:55am2061:57 -
cls375 ttypf 12:06pm42884:01 -
hqb255 ttyq0 10:41pm 19:58 -

Please let me know how these can be cleared. More hung terminal sessions are causing problem for more users to login.

Thanks

It depends on what OS version.
See this long thread about "who -r" problems because of /etc/utmp corruption:
